DOUGLAS S. PETERS, IOM

Vice-Chair Government Affairs

Douglas Peters was named president and chief executive officer of the Abilene, Texas, Chamber of Commerce in October 2015. In his role, Peters oversees the strategic direction of the Chamber and its affiliate organizations, including the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, the Downtown ABI initiative and the Abilene Industrial Foundation, a public/private economic development partnership.

Doug brings over 30 years of economic development and Chamber experience to Abilene with prior stints in Fayetteville, North Carolina; Findlay, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; and Richmond, Indiana. Over the years, Doug has been responsible for leading efforts to identify and implement strategies for mission growth for the U.S. Army’s Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, led a comprehensive downtown revitalization strategic planning initiative that created more than $250 million in new, private investment in Findlay’s central business district, and helped small businesses in Dayton where he applied his family-business background to the everyday challenges and opportunities of emerging companies in the Miami Valley Region.

In 2007, Peters was named the Ohio Chamber Executive of the Year due in part to his leadership through a major flood event that created more than $1 billion in damage and devastated the region. Doug is married to his lifelong sweetheart Whitney, and together they have three children – Elliott, Alaina and Anderson.
