About the Role
The Communication & Downtown Manager is responsible for using his/her skills to nurture the growth of downtown Abilene. Together with the organization, this position will work closely with the Chamber to establish and produce content for the mission of both the Chamber and Abilene Regional Growth Alliance. This person also serves as the staff liaison for the Chamber’s Young Professional program. This is an exempt position.
Requirements
COMMUNICATION:
• Assist the Growth Alliance Leadership with social media scheduling for the Chamber’s Hispanic
Business Council, Downtown ABI, AYP, and more
• Assist the Growth Alliance Leadership with the Chamber’s newsletters ie Monday Morning
Memo, Business Brief, Chamber Events Calendar, Abilene Job Postings Report, Downtown ABI,
etc.
• Assist in managing Chamber websites abileneworks.com, abileneyp.org, abilenechamber.com,
abilenebusiness.com, downtownabi.com, etc.
• Create content for both the Chamber and Abilene Regional Growth Alliance related to
photography and videography for a wide array of campaigns ranging but not limited to week in
reviews, small business week, Chamber celebration, workforce attraction, downtown
storytelling, and more
DOWNTOWN:
Work closely with management, the City of Abilene, the Tax Increment Revitalization Zone (TIRZ) and
others, as appropriate, to establish structure and function and to initiate the Downtown Abilene growth
and development plan. The purpose of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce effort in the downtown is to
develop and implement a strategy for ongoing downtown growth and revitalization that supports
established goals and values for downtown Abilene.
Our general work elements that guide this approach to downtown revitalization include:
• Organization of downtown interests in a unified manner working towards common end
objectives
• Approaching real estate development and design issues as a means to create or preserve an
attractive and sympathetic physical setting. Historic preservation of Abilene’s historic assets is
an important part of this approach
• Coordination of promotional activities to attract new economic life and develop new vigor in the
community
• Assist individual property owners and tenants with building improvement projects, creates and
manages incentive programs for interior and exterior investment, through personal consultation
or aiding with the involvement or professional design consultants and contractors
• Provide the necessary information to downtown business and property owners regarding
financial mechanisms, zoning and historic district ordinance information available to facilitate
improvements to individual properties within the defined downtown area as indicated in the
established growth and development document
ABILENE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS:
• Provide guidance to the AYP steering committee and sub-committees in planning, promoting
and conducting events including AYP After Five, Quarterly Lunches, 20 Under 40, Leadership
Summit, Membership Bash, etc.
• Maintain AYP website to ensure all content is up-to-date and meets the mission of the
organization
• Maintain AYP budget including billing and sponsor relations to ensure sponsor fulfillment is met
• Bill members annually and as needed for dues
• Prepare and distribute HYPE monthly newsletter to AYP membership
OTHER:
• Develop policies and procedures as needed related to position
• Represent the organization in a positive, professional manner in appearance and attitude
• Maintain a pleasant, positive, and helpful attitude among coworkers
• Other duties as assigned
Job Specifications
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
▪ Minimum four-year college degree or work experience equivalent
▪ Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
▪ Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
▪ Advanced computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suites) In addition to the ability to learn and
become proficient with Chamber Master database
▪ Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
▪ Applicants may be subject to a background check
▪ Valid driver’s license and use of vehicle
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit at a desk
and computer for long periods of time. May be requested to lift materials of up to 50 lbs. Communicate
via verbal and written means.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Majority of duties will be performed in and from the Chamber’s office during
regular business hours. Travel and off-site work will be required, as well as occasional work on evenings
and weekends.
TIME COMMITMENT: A minimum average time commitment may exceed 40 hours per week in order to
fulfill the duties required of this exempt position.
